Change of Course

Another day...another change. Change is good. Previously, I was attempting to determine when our customers would access the podcasts that we provide. In my survey the results showed basically whenever. In other words, different times work for different people. That is the point of podcasts. To pinpoint one specific time that our customers would access podcasts really defeats the purpose in the first place.

Therefore, I went back to my school-based days from the previous 6 years and my involvement with school improvement and SAC. I served as SAC chair at 2 different schools and I am currently providing trainings and support for SAC chairs and committees in the county.

My new action research is to draw on my previous experiences from SAC and consider the people that I train. How can podcasts benefit the school improvement process? How can podcasts assist SAC officers in creating more effective meetings? How can podcasts improve the communication between SAC officers from different schools.

We are working on building SAC learning communities and I hope that podcasts can be infused to guide the learning process and the sharing of information, best practices, or whatever.

I am excited about your discovery - Action Research really does work!!!
How do you currently provide information to SAC folks? Do you have information that does not change annually and can be made into a powerpoint podcast (like the one Gary created)? Do you have the opportunity to film a SAC committee at work developing the various components of the SIP?

Thank you for your response. Currently, we provide information via meetings that are scheduled in each area. For example, Monday is South Area SAC officers, Tuesday is North Central SAC officers, etc. Also, we began using E-BOLT last month. We offered 2 online sessions and 3 live sessions. I took the recording and made that available to those who could not make any of the sessions.

Roughly 95% of the information stays the same from year to year. Of course there are policy changes and new requirements regarding School Improvement Plans, AYP, etc. A PowerPoint podcast would be a great idea. If anyone has one that I can view, please CAB it to me.

I am working on getting out to a few schools to film their SAC "at work"...I want to provide podcasts that are organized by specific areas/issues that arise throughout the school year.

Currently, we are working on developing smaller learning communities of SAC officers. How can podcasts be used to enhance the learning community experience?

I was reading how a lawyer decided to post audio podcasts regarding legal advice. He then utilized a few podcast directories to get “his message” out and visible. Before long listeners were calling him for specialized service. Perhaps a similar audio process can be used.
